The Uncanny Forest

Sat Oct 25, 2008, 6:22 AM
There is a little town near Warsaw called Śródborów. What is special about it is its location: the town lies in the middle of a forest (as its name implies). All the houses, shops and leisure centres are placed among trees and bushes. The railway and the roads go between rows of pines. You just walk down a forest path and suddenly see a house, then another one. No lawns, no boardwalks, no concrete. The air is fresh and smells of resin, birds sing all the time and shade is everywhere.

I spent a few days in September in that town. My friend, Malwina, told me she saw something interesting in the forest, so I followed her to that place. On my way, I saw strange trees, whose roots were partially above the ground and looked like a spider's legs. This forest was a bit uncanny. Then, she brought me to an abandoned house. In front of it, there was a gate with a board covered with flaking paint. As we came closer, I managed to decipher the name of the abandoned house: "Dom wypoczynkowy "Niespodzianka" ("The Surprise" leisure centre"). We went on. The elevation had some traces of burning. There was a water container behind the house, that looked like the one from "Dark Water". Everything inside the house looked wasted from the outside. The little yard or maybe garden surrounding the building was completely neglected. It was getting late, so we didn't dare to enter the place.

Yet, I suffer from "Gothic Castle Syndrome", which is a strong urge to explore every strange, intricate and potentially dangerous (or at least imagination-arousing) building, so a couple of days later, when I found some time to stroll around the forest, I went there, entered the abandoned house and examined all three storeys of it. No old tramp attacked me, nothing fell on my head and the floor did not cave in under me (because I stepped very carefully). There were some holes in the floor and in the roof, so it wasn't very safe. On my way back, I came across Malwina. We went there again. On the second floor, in a room that had holes in the floor and was dangerous to walk in, I saw a piece of yellowed paper. I carefully came close to it, picked it up and read it. It was a piece of some boring industrial safety instruction. But it dealt with accidents cause by... falling off something made of too weak a material. What a strange coincidence. I started laughing but it was a bit weird. I showed the paper to Malwina.

Later, we went there again, with our friend Kuba and a camera. I made a lot of photos but I had no control over the camera (especially AF), so most of them are rubbish. I 'fixed' a few acceptable ones and you can watch them now.
